From the late ’70s to the mid-’80s, city pop thrived in Japan—a style blending Western AOR, boogie, funk, jazz, and then-cutting-edge synth sounds. Today, thanks to the YouTube algorithm and the vinyl revival, the genre is experiencing a renaissance. Here are 10 artists you absolutely need to know:
Toshiki Kadomatsu (角松敏生)
One of city pop’s most important producers and performers, known for funky boogie grooves and jazzy harmonies. Beyond his own legendary albums, he also wrote songs for other singers, including Anri.
Iconic albums: Sea Breeze (1981), Weekend Fly to the Sun (1982), After 5 Clash (1984)

Anri (杏里)
Often called the “diva” of city pop, Anri’s voice is both sensual and energetic. With Kadomatsu as producer, her cult classic album Timely!! (1983) was born.
Iconic song: Cat’s Eye

Tatsuro Yamashita (山下達郎)
The “King of City Pop.” A key figure both as a solo artist and in the band Sugar Babe. Together with his wife, Mariya Takeuchi, he forms one of Japan’s most iconic musical duos.
Iconic albums: For You (1982), Ride on Time (1980)

Mariya Takeuchi (竹内まりや)
The most recognizable city pop artist in the West, thanks to Plastic Love (1984), which gained new life online in the 2010s. Her career spans from folk-inspired pop to AOR.
Iconic song: Plastic Love

Momoko Kikuchi (菊池桃子)
Starting out as an idol, she quickly moved into the world of city pop and synthpop. Her 1984 albums Adventure and Ocean Side are cornerstones of the genre. Today, she is also active in politics.
Iconic album: Adventure (1984)

Masayoshi Takanaka (高中正義)
A virtuoso guitarist whose jazz-funk compositions radiate sunny, tropical vibes. His energetic playing has made him legendary in city pop circles and beyond.
Iconic albums: An Insatiable High (1977), All of Me (1979)

Junko Ohashi (大橋純子)
Known for her soulful voice, often called “the Japanese Aretha Franklin” for her powerful and emotional style—standing apart from the lighter idol sound.
Iconic songs: Telephone Number (1981), I Love You So

Tomoko Aran (亜蘭知子)
A more underground, new wave-leaning city pop artist. Her cult album Fuyu-Kukan (Floating Space) (1983) remains a fan favorite.
Iconic album: Fuyu-Kukan (1983)

Omega Tribe (オメガトライブ)
A true symbol of ’80s seaside vibes. Their first era, as S. Kiyotaka & Omega Tribe (1983–1985), produced classics like Summer Suspicion and Aqua City. Later, with a new lineup and Japanese-Brazilian singer Carlos Toshiki, they became Carlos Toshiki & Omega Tribe (1986–1991). Despite lineup changes, their sun-soaked, AOR-infused sound made them one of the era’s most memorable bands.
Iconic songs: Summer Suspicion, Aqua City

Hitomi Tohyama (当山ひとみ)
Famous for her funky, boogie-driven sound. Her album Sexy Robot (1983) is often hailed as one of the strongest city pop records of the era.
